Despite spending more money per capita on maternal health than any other country in the world, the U.S. ranks 55th in maternal deaths and is the only high resource nation with a consistently rising maternal mortality rate. This burden is not shared equally: racism has led to stark and persistent disparities, with Black, Brown, and Indigenous people most likely to experience maternal deaths and life-threatening complications.
The Solution
Most maternal deaths in the U.S. can be prevented by timely access to quality, respectful and equitable care, ensuring that all people have equal opportunity to give birth with dignity by placing Black and Indigenous birthing people at the center of the equation.
